I've recently become a blog book reviewer, so when I write a review I try to write it as short as I can, cause if I were the one reading it, I wouldn't be attracted by a 5 long paragraph review. I have my own ratings system, like others do: ;) GREAT if I love it; :)NICE if I really liked it, and other 3 categories.
And I'll write what I thought about the book, like if someone would ask me to read a book and then review it, I wouldn't lie and say I loved it, just because I know/want the author to like me more, I'd say the truth.
xo,
Ella

Elizabeth, I'm probably a dork for saying so but I'm really interested in what other people look for in book reviews. :-) What would be an example of a type of commentary you've seen that made you see something in a new way? I'm always struggling to come up with something useful to say in reviews of books I really enjoyed, and that sounds like a great thing to aim for in the future. :-)

I'm totally the opposite on this, which probably reflects that I read reviews for different reasons. I don't read reviews primarily to find more books to read (although I have discovered some through reviews, my stack of waiting books is always too long as is, and I'm kind of picky about spoilers, too).

Mostly, I want commentaries that make me think about something about YA, or kids', or fiction in general in a new way, whether or not I ever read the book in question. Although I suppose that's not really a *review* per se.

And, because that's what I read for, when I started blogging I had to learn to do things like provide enough book summary so that people who haven't read the book know what the hell you're talking about... which I think is more obvious to people who write more standard-format reviews!

Jessica, I'm glad it helped! Have you found that certain things in your reviews seem to be well-received by your readers? I'd love to add to this list with advice from other bloggers. :-)
