Lisa, that reminds me that I read a nonfiction book once about the most effective ways to change someone's behavior. Verbal persuasion isn't one of the top techniques, which surprised me.

I wish I owned that book to reference, but here are a couple tidbits from the web site:
* When trying to convince yourself or others to change minds, do you create ways to experience the need to change (For example: field trips, pilots, trial runs, or other hands-on experiences) rather than simply trying to talk yourself or others into changing through presentations, lectures, pep talks, or other verbal means?
* Do you use powerful and credible stories as a way of touching people’s hearts and minds with the need to change?

Interesting stuff!

I just keep beating them over the head with how great the books are. It doesn't work so well. I'm thinking the trade (reason 3) would work better.

Heather: Whoa! I've never ponied up cash to get someone to read YA, that's hardcore. :-) I wonder if reverse psychology would work with stubborn folks like that?

About the only thing I've gotten anybody to read was the Twilight Saga. Oooo! And I got my friend (who doesn't really count, because she likes YA but just doesn't read as much as I do) to read Tithe.
My sister is only a year younger, yet she refuses to read. I've tried all of the above--even offered to pay up to $10 a book for her to read. Apparently, I suck at life--or just persuasion. Either that, or my people are particulary difficult. (Myself, I'm gonna go with the latter. It makes me feel better. LOL!)

Jen, I love that idea to suggest parents read the same books as their kids! My daughter's only 15 months old, but I'm already fantasizing about a mother-daughter book club when she's old enough. :-)

Your post also reminded me that *I* still need to read the Gregor the Overlander books! Oops.

I've been following a path similar to Casey's with my SO. Harry Potter to Percy Jackson, then The Hunger Games to the Gregor the Overlander books. He's almost done with all of these, and I'm thinking of trying Diane Duane's So You Want to Be a Wizard series on him next. The key is definitely picking the right books.

I also use #1 a lot with family members.

One other thing that I've had work sometimes is to suggest to parents that they read the books that their kids are reading. It's a great way for parents to reinforce the value of reading, and open up interesting avenues for discussion (especially with parents of teens).

Heather: I love it! Way cool that your 14 yo nephew enjoys reading enough to have a TBR, by the way. :-D

I had to "make a deal" with my nephew (14 years old) because he didn't trust my taste in YA... he's way too cool for his own good. He was all the time telling me, "You should read this; you should read that," but he'd never heed my suggestions, so I read one of the trilogies he recommended, Black, Red, and White by Ted Dekker (which I liked) and I told him I wouldn't read any more until he'd read three books I've recommended to him. He's got Girls for Breakfast, Stop Me if You've Heard This Before, and Hacking Harvard on his TBR now (only to prove that my taste definitely sucks). We'll see...

Casey, I'm jealous! I'm trying to get my hubby to read more, but it's just not part of his routine. Hmm, maybe I should "make a deal" with him that I'll make exercising part of my routine if he'll make reading part of his.

It must be so fun to see him get into the Percy Jackson series like that! So do you have a book all picked out for him after he finishes that series? :-)
