Catherine, you make some good points too. Argh, I'm so torn! It's not that I hate last year's novel, it's just that my heart goes thump-thump-THUMP for this year's.

Maybe I'll alternate between them. I work part-time so that gives me 1 full day plus a couple hours off every week. So the couple hours could be for the old novel, the full day could be devoted to the new one.

This might work!

Jodie, that's good to keep in mind. I started two other novels before doing NaNo last year, but lost interest before finishing the first drafts. I wonder if I'm one of those people who just needs to truck through to get it done, otherwise I'll never make it to the finish line with anything. Hmm...

That happens to most writers--the call of the siren, the shiny new idea. I'm unpublished and have written maybe 9 ms, and one of those went through six drafts. I worked on it for two years and maybe would've kept tinkering on it forever, until someone from my writer's group suggested that sometimes you just need to move on.

My idea for going with the ms that gives you juice is just that--you're fired up about it. If you hate the original ms, can hardly stand the the thought of working on it, you probably won't get back into it, anyway.

I remember reading an interview with Meg Cabot where she said she has boxes of unfinished novels because before she got disciplined she abandoned them for a new shiny thing, which then got chucked for another new shiny thing...so on until she buckled down and finished something, then became a published writer. She implores people not to give up on their established projects because they will never go back to them and ideas get wasted. So something to think about.
